Nov. 28. Kona is Native American (Cree) for snow !

Our horse Kona in this morning's winter wonderland. Kona is the Cree (Native American) word for snow. And she sure fits into the snow covered landscape.
Yesterday was the most unusual day in aspect of the weather we ever experienced. In the morning a Chinook wind came up, which is a very strong and warm West wind. After hours of blowing up to 60 km/h, all snow has melted and it looked like an October day. This is very unusual for this Central Alberta region. Further South around Calgary the Chinook wind blows more often and all snow is gone several time in wintertime. The wind broke off a few of the tall aspen trees on the pasture, but all our horses and Longhorns were alright. Then, in the evening, it started to snow and covered everything in a soft layer of white. It is not very cold, just under the freezing point, and the snow sticks to the fences and trees and makes for a beautiful winter wonderland.
In Southern Alberta the winds got as strong as 120 km/h at times. Big rig trucks got blown over, Calgary downtown was closed off due to debris falling onto the streets and the county of Lethbridge had to battle a grass fire. Luckily today everything is back to normal.
