Jan. 10. Bear !

Bear's hair is so thick, it feels like sitting on a soft blanket when riding bareback. Sometimes when we visit the horses and it is not too cold, we take a halter along and ride a bit around on the pasture. The other horses are always very interested, here is Winterhawk checking us out.
The last two days have been very windy with a little bit of snowfall. In the Eastern part of Alberta they got more snow and today all the school busses out East were not running. We only have to shovel a bit of snow most places, but some spots have bad snowdrifts, so I had to go out this early morning before the school bus arrived to get the bottom of the driveway clear, otherwise the bus would have gotten stuck. Since Hans-Marty always leaves very early in the morning with his powerful Logging Truck with double wheels, he flattens wide tracks on our little country road, perfect for the school bus, the neighbour and me to drive on.
With that bad wind for two days, the Longhorns stayed mostly in the forest on the bottom of the land, where there is no wind at all. The came out to the hay, walked up to the waterer and back into the forest for a rest, then same routine again. The horses are now out on the Westpasture and they usually come to the corral near the house a couple of times a day for water, mineral block and a visit, but they haven't showed up since Saturday, they prefer to stay in the bushes on that Westpasture, where they are sheltered from the wind and are satisfied to have snow for water.
